When you think of Sonic The Hedgehog, your thoughts probably settle on the fact that it’s one of the greatest gaming franchises of all time, and quite rightly so. Since his debut in 1991, Sonic has cemented his status as a gaming icon. More recently, that success crossed over into films after Sonic The Hedgehog 2 beat out some pretty dire competition to become the most successful gaming movie adaptation ever.
Despite the franchise's success, SEGA are no stranger to creating a dud - which is exactly what 2006’s Sonic The Hedgehog was. Also referred to as Sonic 06, the 3D platformer was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and is considered to be one of the worst games of all time. Despite that fact, Sonic The Hedgehog will soon be available to purchase once more.
Sonic Origins, a collection of the famous blue hedgehog's greatest gaming hits, releases on 23 June. Check out the official trailer below.
The game was delisted from digital stores but has since been spotted on the Xbox 360 Marketplace a whopping 10 years after it disappeared. If you’ve got a spare $5 to spend on a heap of trash, then you’re in luck. Sonic The Hedgehog is currently only available on Xbox 360 and is not compatible with Xbox One or Series X/S.
Advert
Sonic The Hedgehog was made by Sonic Team. Development on the title was rushed so that it could be released in time for Christmas. The end result was rife with bugs. Add in a clanky camera, terrible loading times, a poor story, and questionable voice acting and you can see why Sonic The Hedgehog was so critically panned. (We recently replayed the game - and yikes.)
It’s not yet known why Sonic The Hedgehog has returned, and the likelihood is that it’s probably a glitch given the limited availability. It wouldn’t be the first time Xbox had made an error like this, but who knows? Maybe SEGA is embracing their dark past. Either way, if you did desperately want to get your hands on this game, you've probably gotta go fast.
