I was, and still am, a huge fan of Sony’s handheld output, particularly the Vita.
So, even if this is a leak or a rumour with no credence, I, for one, am very excited to hear that Sony is planning a new handheld.
The PS Portal is getting better and better but many still want a dedicated Sony handheld
If anyone is going to go toe-to-toe with Nintendo and their Switch 2, it’ll be Sony, who are reportedly looking to have their new handheld play PlayStation 5 games.

According to Bloomberg, “The product is aimed at expanding Sony’s reach and contending with Nintendo Co. for the portable gaming market.”
With so many fans eager for another Sony handheld, the PS Portal didn’t really scratch that itch, despite its recent update to play games directly from the cloud.
It’s likely that the handheld was to test the waters, which seems short-sighted given its limitations.
If this rumour proves to be true, it will also compete with Microsoft who are also looking to enter the portable market.

The report goes on to say, “Tokyo-based Sony initially had intended for it to function as a standalone device like Valve Corp.’s Steam Deck, the people said,” in reference to the PS Portal.
Obviously, Sony chose to go another way and perhaps are seeing that there is a huge market for people playing their games across a home console and a handheld, something Nintendo proved years ago.
I’d love to see this come off. The handheld market has been dominated by Nintendo for decades and I think some healthy competition could spice things up.
And while Valve has done its best with the Steam Deck, and this ushered in a lot of PC handhelds, casual gamers don’t seem all that interested.

Being able to play the latest God of War or The Last of Us on the go, while earning trophies and experiencing gorgeous visuals, is something we must have.
