Netflix has shown off the first trailer for its upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners series and good lord it is not for folks who are squeamish.
The animation is being handled by Studio Trigger who have worked on anime such as Little Witch Academia and Kill La Kill, the latter’s director Hiroyuki Imaishi will be handling Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Enough preamble, let’s check out that trailer, shall we?
The ten episode run will be a standalone story set in Night City - the same location as CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 game - and will focus around an unnamed street kid as they try to survive the murderous streets of the megacity. The blurb reads “Having everything to lose, he stays alive by becoming an edgerunner - a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.”

The trailer itself is wild, to say the least. The opening seconds seem to capture the exact essence of CD Projekt and creator Mike Pondsmith’s world in all its neon-soaked, futuristic, body-modified bombast. It is also, of course, incredibly gruesome - there’s no signs that Studio Trigger are going to be pulling their punches. And neither should they - to do so would be to spit in the face of the entire ethos of the Cyberpunk universe. There’s also a second clip which you can see below, which leans much more into the gore. Dig that guttural grindcore soundtrack as random dudes get ripped apart and dismembered. Very much a vibe.
CD Projekt RED are set to produce the series with Rafał Jaki acting as showrunner and executive producer. Jaki worked on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher: Ronin manga, so you’d hope it’s in good hands. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will release on Netflix in September 2022.
