It's been a while since the Need for Speed series has been at the top of its game but if you've still got a taste for the old-school entries, then this gorgeous remaster may be worth your attention.
Back in the 2000s, it was certainly a golden era of video games with the likes of Halo: Combat Evolved, Resident Evil 4, Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and much more. It was also an amazing time for racing games and arguably the leader of that pack was 2003’s Need for Speed: Underground from Electronic Arts.

Need for Speed: Underground was met with high critical acclaim upon its release, scoring an impressive 85 on the aggregate website, Metacritic. It received praise for its then gorgeous visuals, fun gameplay and story campaign inspired by the Fast and Furious movies.

Fans have been dying to see this iconic series make a triumphant return but any glimmer of hope for that happening may have been dashed as current developers were shifted over to assist DICE with the production of the next Battlefield entry.
However, while we wait for the Need for Speed: Underground remake that may never arrive, talented modders have taken matters into their own hands with this gorgeous new-gen remaster that’s available to download now for free via moddb.com.
The free remaster in question is called ‘Need for Speed: Underground (RTX Remix)’ and it takes full advantage of upscaled textures, improved lighting as well as global illumination and path tracing technology.
There’s no telling when or if Electronic Arts will ever remake or remaster the classic Need for Speed games but at least if you have a capable PC, you can play glorious fanmade remasters such as the one featured in this article.

The last game to be released in this series, Need for Speed Unbound, is available now on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It’s also available to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers at no extra cost.
