Activision is considering announcing and releasing 2022's Call Of Duty instalment earlier than usual in response to the disappointing sales of 2021's Call Of Duty: Vanguard.
This year's Call Of Duty is widely expected to be a sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare reboot, fittingly called Modern Warfare II. The new entry, developed once again by Infinity Ward, is rumoured to feature a Narcos-style campaign that will see players fight against a South American drug cartel, as well as a slew of all-new multiplayer modes.
Multiple reliable Call Of Duty insiders are now claiming that Modern Warfare II will launch sooner than expected. Known Battlefield leaker Tom Henderson took to Twitter to claim the new game will be announced in the Summer, with an October release date. A big Warzone update will follow soon after. Charlie Intel and MW2 Ghost have heard the same.
Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard both launched in November, though it is worth noting that previous Call Of Duty games - including 2019's Modern Warfare - previously released in October. Still, Henderson seems sure that the release date has more to do with Vanguard's sales, which saw a definite decline on Black Ops Cold War's.
This news comes just days after Activision released a frank statement admitting that Modern Warfare, Warzone, and Vanguard are a mess right now.
"We wanted to take a minute to talk about fixing the game," Activision wrote in a message to fans on the Call Of Duty Twitter account. "We hear you, and we feel your frustrations.
"Our teams are hard at work addressing the issues that are being experienced across Vanguard, Warzone, and Modern Warfare. Updates are being deployed as quickly as possible. We want everyone to have a seamless experience, no matter which game, game mode, or platform you play on."
It's no coincidence that the franchises' current state comes at a time when Activision is attempting to deal with mass developer walkouts over its current leadership, allegations of harassment, and the mass firing of Raven Software's Quality Assurance team.
