There are very few video game franchises quite as iconic as Metal Gear, spawned from the creative mind of legendary developer Hideo Kojima.
The iconic series from Konami began in 1987 for the NES, before receiving two more sequels, both of which were released in 1990. However, the series hit new heights following the launch of Metal Gear Solid in 1998 for the original PlayStation. Metal Gear Solid followed the story of the returning Solid Snake, now voiced by David Hayter, on a one-man rescue mission to Shadow Moses Island in Alaska.

The Metal Gear series would get further sequels, the most recent of which was Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in 2015. And yes, I’m doing my best to ignore 2018’s Metal Gear Survive. However, the series has received somewhat of a resurgence in recent months following the release of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol.1 which includes remasters of the original games from 1987 to 2004.

What’s more, in 2023, Konami announced that 2004’s Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is getting a remake to be released this year. This continues the recent Konami trend of remakes following Silent Hill 2, developed by Bloober Team, also expected to arrive this year. As revealed 16 minutes into a recent Konami livestream on YouTube, it seems that if the MGS3 remake is successful, officially called Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Konami could be open to remaking other games from the series.
This news has given fans hope that we might finally get the remake of the original Metal Gear Solid that we’ve been dreaming of. Not to ignore the 2004 remake on the Nintendo GameCube, Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes. Yet, could the original Metal Gear Solid of the PS1 be the next remake? I’m not 100% sure.
The original game on the PS1 is the most likely outcome, but Konami is using the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake as the starting point for a potential reboot. So it’s not outside the realms of possibility that any of the NES or PSP games might be remade first, after all, they all arrived chronologically before the PS1 game. Yes, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is set before the NES games, but I doubt we’ll be getting a remake of that any time soon.
Whatever happens to the series following the upcoming remake, it’s an exciting time to be a fan of the series. Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will be released this year on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
