Fans cannot wait for the next release of BioWare’s next entry in its beloved sci-fi RPG series, Mass Effect but it seems like we’ve received a disheartening update that none of us wanted to hear.
Mass Effect made its debut in 2007 and has since spawned various sequels establishing itself as one of BioWare’s most popular properties alongside the likes of Dragon Age as well as the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
Check out the Mass Effect 5 trailer below!
The last game in the series to be released was Mass Effect Andromeda in 2017 which wasn't received well, at least initially thanks to being plagued by tons of bugs and glitches at launch. Thankfully at least, seven years have passed since the launch of Mass Effect Andromeda and while not perfect, it’s in a much better state now, especially if you play it on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Yet, when Mass Effect 5 was announced during The Game Awards in 2020, fans' excitement was blasted into the stratosphere especially when we set eyes on the returning Liara T’Soni. So when we saw the return of everyone’s favourite Asari, surely it meant that the band was getting back together?
I am about to go into spoiler territory for the original Mass Effect trilogy, so you have been warned but I will try to be somewhat vague. In a nutshell, unless there’s a triumphant miracle in the Mass Effect lore, the male or female Commander Shepard isn't coming back.
When speaking to Dexerto, Jennifer Hale, the voice of ‘FemShep’ revealed that she’s not received a call from either Electronic Arts or BioWare about reprising her role in Mass Effect 5 and it seems ‘MaleShep’, Mark Meer hasn't either.
“I don’t think I can get in trouble because I honestly don’t know anything,” said Hale. “I would love to come back, I would come back in a hot second, but I haven’t heard from anyone yet.”

Jennifer Hale went on to say that if we want her and Mark Meer to reprise their soles in Mass Effect 5, we should let our voices be heard towards EA and BioWare. Whether or not those voices will be heard, remains to be seen, but we can at least try.
A release date hasn't been announced for Mass Effect 5 nor have platforms been confirmed, yet.
