Up to the release of Hogwarts Legacy, Gryffindor has always been the Wizarding World franchise’s favourite house. Given that it’s the house that Harry Potter himself was sorted into, I suppose it’s unsurprising that the series would be biased towards it.
However, Hogwarts Legacy has given Harry Potter fans the chance to explore the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and truly live out their dreams of being a witch or wizard in the way that they want to. In doing so, this has proven that Gryffindor isn’t nearly as popular as the books and movies would make you think.
Before we get into it, take a look at Hogwarts Legacy’s funniest mod starring PS1 Hagrid below.
As highlighted by fans on Reddit, it’s quite easy to monitor how many players are in each Hogwarts house based on the completion rate for the four house-exclusive quests. Each house gets a different achievement for finding the Map Chamber - Gryffindors unlock ‘The Gryffindor in the Graveyard’, Ravenclaws get ‘The Wise Owl’, Hufflepuffs get access to ‘The Auror’s Apprentice’, and Slytherins can grab ‘The Toast of the Town’. Obviously, if you’re a dedicated completionist and restart the game several times, you can get all of them, but I think we can safely assume that most people aren’t doing that.

So, what do the figures show? Currently, on Steam, one house is way above the rest when it comes to its popularity - Slytherin, with over 27% of players grabbing the exclusive achievement. These guys just keep on winning in this game - fellow Slytherin character, Sebastian Sallow, has been continually praised by fans for having the best quest in the game. Some even believe he’s gaming’s greatest ever NPC.
Meanwhile, Hufflepuff is by far the least popular, with little over 13% of players unlocking the house’s achievement. But what about Gryffindor? It might have avoided last place, but it’s still only in third - just over 21% of players have got the house’s exclusive achievement. To be fair, Ravenclaw is barely above it, with almost 23% unlocking ‘The Wise Owl’.
These figures will probably change over time as more people play the game, but it’s going to take a lot for any other house to overtake Slytherin’s popularity.
