Guerrilla Games’ identity has somewhat changed over the years. Previously, the Amsterdam-based studio was best known for producing the Killzone series but of course, that all changed in 2017 when Horizon Zero Dawn became a huge hit, earning Aloy a nice position as one of PlayStation’s official icons.

Since then, it’s been full speed ahead on expanding the world of Horizon. This year, Guerrilla released Horizon Forbidden West - which has already won the first GOTY award of 2022 - and the VR experience Horizon Call of the Mountain is next on the roster. You may be thinking: Has Guerrilla completely forgotten about Killzone? Well, no. The franchise’s fate is much, much worse.

Take a look at the trailer for Horizon Call Of The Mountain below.

Guerrilla have confirmed that multiplayer servers will soon be switched off for good on several Killzone titles. The change will come into effect on 12 August 2022. Killzone: Mercenary and Killzone Shadow Fall will both lose their multiplayer component and for Shadow Fall, this includes Intercept Mode. Guerrilla Cambridge’s RIGS: Mechanized Combat League will also see its multiplayer server switched off.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Guerrilla wrote: “On 12 August 2022, online servers for Killzone: Mercenary, Killzone Shadow Fall (including Intercept Mode) and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League will shut down. Online features (including online multiplayer modes) will cease on that date. Single player offline modes remain available.”

As Guerrilla notes, single player modes will still be available to play. Reports suggest that the decision comes simply due to the fact that the playerbase for these titles is so low, which isn’t wholly surprising.

Both Shadow Fall and Mercenary are the ‘newest’ Killzone games and they’re nine years old. Killzone: Mercenary is also a PlayStation Vita title which despite having a dedicated cult following, isn’t a widely used platform. Still, I’m sure this news will leave fans feeling disappointed.
