We all love a cheeky game secret, don’t we? Whether they’re actually intentional, like one recently discovered and easily missable (but absolutely heartbreaking) interaction in Red Dead Redemption 2, or hilarious glitches which have gone undiscovered for years (like this one, which allows you to play tag with the dragons in Skyrim), they’re a lot of fun, and often shed a light on the games they come from in various ways - for good or bad.
Speaking of which, one GTA V player has just discovered a really bizarre secret which has been hiding in the game’s programming for almost nine years now. As reported by PCGamesN, a chase scene in one of the game’s early missions, Father/Son, is apparently populated by large, invisible, flying trucks. For some reason.
While you're here, be sure to check out this awesome GTA V mod, which lets you play as The Boys' Homelander.
This was first uncovered and shared by Twitter user @LucasIsPersonal: “GTA V makes use of two flying, normally invisible trucks playing back vehicle movement as cinematic cameras,” they wrote. “Unhiding them produces an amusing result.”
So, the big question here is simply, why? While we can’t peer into the genius minds of the folks over at Rockstar for a definitive answer, as @LucasIsPersonal says, it seems most likely that these invisible trucks serve as hidden cameras, as in this mission, the player can choose to switch to cinematic cameras which show the action from the angles that the trucks appear to be at.

The user clarified that this only seems to be the case within this specific mission, though - the rest of the game uses “proper cameras”, as you’d expect. Which then begs the next question, why were things different for this mission? And why trucks?! PCGamesN suggests it could be since the invisible trucks use the same assets as what were already being used in the sequence, so therefore using duplicates wouldn’t create another asset to load, saving on memory. @LucasIsPersonal also theorised that the regular cameras may not have been able to keep up with the chase, and could have become desynchronised.
These are all just theories though, simply leaving us as the players baffled with the new-found knowledge that we’ve been surrounded by floating, invisible trucks for years now. And who knows what other hidden assets might be lurking out there? Spooky stuff.
