Those desperately awaiting an update on Rockstar Games’ upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI are clearly starting to lose the plot, because the community at large has gaslit themselves into believing a new trailer for the game will drop on December 3rd.
In a thread titled “Frankly I hope I'm wrong” over on the r/GTA6 subreddit, one user seems convinced that a new GTA VI trailer is very close to coming out.
So, what’s led them to think this? It’s probably best I let you read their theory on the matter.

In response to one user’s inquiry about the theory’s legitimacy, user Anolen95 laid out all of their information.
“Basically someone looking at the trends for [Grand Theft Auto V] and rdr2, the trailers were roughly a year apart, and they mentioned that the first VI trailer was released right before the online winter update,” user Anolen95 replied.
“If they follow that trend, an early December trailer 2 release makes sense to generate traffic and revenue for the online update. Also, Sony is rumored to have purchased some marketing rights to VI, and there may be some kind of PlayStation event or announcement on the 3rd. It makes sense, but no telling for sure.”
Phew, ok, let’s break this all down.

Firstly, the previous trailer dates.
The first GTA V trailer came out on 30 April 2013, the second on 9 July 2013, and the third on 29 August 2013. The first Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer came out on 20 October 2016, the second on 28 September 2017, and the third on 2 May 2018.
So that bit is mostly nonsense. There was an 11-month gap between RDR2’s first and second trailers, yes, but Rockstar announced that the game would be delayed until 2018 prior to that second trailer coming out.
Secondly, that Sony “marketing rights” rumour. That one is probably rubbish too.

There’s been a bunch of rumours flying around that Sony’s next State of Play event will be on December 3, and that they have also obtained exclusive marketing rights to advertise GTA VI in conjunction with the PS5 Pro.
While Sony does have a habit of announcing that their State of Play events will take place a mere day before they actually do, we almost always hear about them before their official announcement. December 3 is six days away, and we’ve heard nothing.
Plus, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb has even straight-up stated that nobody has heard a peep out of Sony regarding their next State of Play.
Unfortunately folks, I don’t think this latest theory has any merit to it. But hey, at least there’s still the moon theory.
