Well, this is the last thing I expected to hear today.
Forget about Grand Theft Auto VI for just a few moments. I know, I know. It’s hard to do.
But an old and beloved favourite has made a grand return.

You’ll soon be able to play Grand Theft Auto III on the, wait for it, SEGA Dreamcast in a move I don’t think any of us saw coming.
I’ll preface this by saying that this is, perhaps rather obviously, via an unofficial port but that doesn’t make the project any less exciting or impressive.
As reported by Gfinity Esports, the project is the work of a developer known as SKMP with progress being tracked by YouTuber thesegaguru.
The project has not yet finished development so the game isn’t yet wholly playable but it’s exciting to see that someone is tackling this ambitious endeavour.

It turns out, Grand Theft Auto III was initially supposed to release on the Dreamcast so this is somewhat of a homecoming, if the project is successful.
This original release was abandoned by Rockstar after the console underperformed.
ICYMI: You may as well watch the trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI one more time.
The idea is that you won’t need a modded Dreamcast to play the game. You should be able to play it on a native console once the project is complete.

For now, there are missing textures but the game is running - and that’s a major starting point.
SKMP has already undergone correcting colours. Presumably the restoring of textures will be pretty high on the priority list.
You can view the current status of the project below.
Already, a ton of progress has been made in a very short space of time so it wouldn’t surprise me if a final build was complete before the year is out but we’ll see.

We’ll be keeping an eye on any and all updates. This is an impressive attempt at restoring a small slice of video game history.
