A God of War Ragnarök sequel could be on the horizon sooner than we thought after a comment was made by an industry insider in recent weeks suggesting a future DLC or half-sequel.
Despite God of War Ragnarök not even celebrating its first birthday yet, fans are already desperate to see Kratos and his son Atreus on their Norse mythology inspired adventures. With the series beginning its journey way back in 2005, it has since gone on to get a modern-day remake, making Santa Monica Studio’s action adventure more popular than ever. Now to the delight of fans, there could be more in store for the Spartan warrior.

This news comes courtesy of a Tweet posted on 6 October from the Twitter account ViewerAnon. In response to an IGN article discussing the growing popularity of half-sequels, the insider replied, “IGN's bang-on here - this is how you cut the gap between releases while also maybe letting greener teams work on the half-sequel with established tools and support. Santa Monica Studio's working on new God of War stuff and I wonder whether it will be Ragnarök DLC or a half-sequel.”

A half-sequel, or standalone expansion, is a great way to bridge the gap between a series’ instalments by releasing a ‘1.5’ game between titles. This was seen in recent years with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man that allowed us to experience Miles’ story before he would go onto play a large part in the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. If this was the case for the God of War series, we could perhaps see a half-sequel dedicated to Atreus or maybe even Freya.
With two major Sony titles going down the half-sequel route, this could become the norm for AAA games as another way of exploring side character’s stories as well as giving players even more content. It remains to be seen if Santa Monica Studio will be exploring this with God of War Ragnarök but I for one would not be disappointed.
