It seems we may be getting a new God of War game on the PlayStation 5 this year after all, according to info from a well-regarded journalist.
The very first God of War game turned 20 years old this weekend on March 22, but, unfortunately for fans, Santa Monica Studio didn’t have a cheeky reveal lined up for a new game during the celebration.
However, it seems we might still be getting one anyway. This news is coming by way of Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, who stated that a “new side-story” in the franchise is apparently coming out sometime this year.

“OK. Everyone keeps asking about this, so I've tried to find out more: There's still a Greek God of War thing coming out this year, but it's not a remaster collection. It's a new side-story project,” Grubb revealed in a post on Bluesky.
“I was never told about a Remaster collection, but I asked a source about the rumors (that I saw were focused on a collection) and they told me that nothing God of War would happen at the State of Play but something could show up at the anniversary.”
Over in a post on the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit detailing the news, fans had some pretty interesting theories about what a side-story God of War game might end up looking like.
“Shot in the dark, a Spider-Man: Miles Morales sort of game built off of Ragnarok,” commented user Arcade_Gann0n.

“A stop gap until the next era for the series can begin, and a way to revisit the roots.”
"Kratos returns to rebuilt Greece with the remaining living gods wanting revenge," replied user SilverDragon7.
I’m on board with both of these ideas. A God of War game set in Greece would give fans of the original games something to look forward to, and a spin-off style game that builds off of God of War Ragnarök’s shell would give Santa Monica Studio a bit of a breather in between big releases.
We’ll probably have to wait until Sony’s next State of Play event to hear more, however (whenever that is).
