It’s been a long time since we’ve genuinely had a top-tier entry from Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon series, well, at least in my opinion. That being said, some fans believe that 2017’s Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is a severely underrated game.
The Ghost Recon series began in 2001 when it was released on PC, PlayStation 2, the original Xbox, and the Nintendo GameCube. Back then and for the many entries that followed, this series was very linear but tactical gameplay was paramount. Some could say that the last old-school entry in this Ubisoft series was Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier in 2012. That being said, a new Ghost Recon is reportedly in development, so hopefully that might provide the resurgence that this series needs.

Following the release of Future Soldier, we had a failed free-to-play multiplayer shooter on PC before the arrival of the topic of today’s discussion, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands. At least according to the aggregate website Metacritic, Wildlands did not set the world alight with critical acclaim scoring a maximum of 76.

Make no mistake, 76 is still a good score but perhaps below the standard of what some fans might expect of this series. It’s certainly a better score than 62 which was achieved by 2019’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, which ironically would be the breaking point for this series, at least for now.
It might also be fair to assume that despite Ghost Recon Breakpoint arriving after Wildlands, it seems that the 2017 release may be tarred with the same brush used in 2019. As such, Ghost Recon Wildlands may be viewed upon unfavourably, which is a shame, because it’s a decent game.
“I will never understand the hate for this game,” said Redditor Cartopcarrot730 to fellow members on the thread. “I thought this game was generally well-liked? It's Breakpoint that gets the well-deserved hate,” replied Ivedefected. “This was a very enjoyable game! The one that came after was crap, but Wildlands had a lot going for it,” exclaimed sam_jackson84.
“I enjoyed it. Myself and friends would often make our own missions. For background, I'm ex-military and my friends always had a keen interest in it,” said Royal42Smallsy. “We'd parachute in and drop maybe 2km from it, patrol in nice and slow. Quick recce then infiltrate and set C4 on whatever we can before withdrawing and blowing it up. It made a nice change of pace and was fun to be tactical.”

From what I hear, Wildlands is a much better game now than it was, so perhaps it’s time to jump back in for some multiplayer mayhem. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands is out now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
