Cliff Bleszinski, also known as CliffyB, has made claims that his seminal series Gears of War could benefit from a God of War style reboot. "I've always said, Phil Spencer has my number" mentions Bleszinski.
God of War got a reboot back in 2018, taking the Greek demigod to Nordic shores and giving him a son. The series, which was already a success, garnered huge critical acclaim and wowed players. Would this treatment work with Gears of War, too?
It's been a while since the Gears of War franchise saw the success it once had
Gears of War was once a franchise that carried the same weight for Microsoft as Halo did. Both series were always highly anticipated, but in recent years Gears of War slipped into the background. "Gears will always be near and dear to my heart" says Cliffy in conversation recently. The series creator also stated that he is "happy to consult" on a possible project.

But would a reboot work? Simple answer? Yes, it would. The first few Gears games were simple, action-driven titles that focused on aliens and overly large meat-headed soldiers who would kill and eliminate them. The series was responsible for creating and popularising certain gaming mechanics we still see today, like cover shooting and active reloading. The stories were popcorn-fuelled, emotional melodrama and the series once had a thriving esports scene with players battling it out with chainsaw guns.
Of course there's a place for that in modern gaming. Sadly, the series became a little convoluted as it went on and it struggled to hold its identity, which is why a reboot would work. We could have back the old familiar characters, re-explore themes with a modern day view and keep things basic - soldiers versus aliens. It would certainly shake-up third-person action games.
