There was a time where every shop's video game section was filled to the brim with various plastic instrument peripherals. Gamers’ homes were overflowing with the things. Truly, you’d think that there were more guitar-shaped gaming accessories out there than actual guitars. What a time to be alive.
Sadly though, those days left almost as quickly as they arrived. It’s now been almost eight years since the last Guitar Hero game was released, which is honestly a bit of a tragedy. Last year, Xbox boss Phil Spencer directly expressed interest in reviving the franchise, but that assumes that Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision goes through, and there’s already been plenty of issues with that.
Take a look at this incredible Guitar Hero-playing robot below.
Over on Reddit, fans are questioning why it’s been so long without a new title in the first place: “The Guitar Hero games were popular as f**k and sold like crazy back in the day. Why is no one making a new one?” Dafish20 asked. “I really miss these kind of games. Thinking about it this would also be a good game for the new PSVR2.”

“Agree. My son and I loved them. I now have a nine-year-old daughter and was really wanting to get her something. I’ve found some second-hand stuff but it’s crazy priced. Hell, even my wife liked them once Rock Band came out. She took over the mic for us,” IRunAway replied. “I wish that someone would put out a new one (Rock Band) with the full set of instruments. Game companies really blew a golden opportunity with this during the COVID lockdown,” added desertmo0n. “I would LOVE a new Guitar Hero game,” agreed TOO_FUTURE.
If Microsoft’s buyout of Activision goes through, we’ll just have to hope that Phil Spencer is still interested in pursuing a new instalment in the series. A shop can never have too many Guitar Hero controllers in it, really.
