Survival horror fans are always pining for more. When it comes to Silent Hill, this is a constant. For years we’ve been treated to new horror games or iterative versions of Resident Evil, but Silent Hill has either languished or brought less-than-ideal installments.
Enter a team of fans and modders who want to expand the Silent Hill world themselves and are doing so through their project, Whispering Hills. The mod is built on the Fallout 4 engine, creating the look and feel of a Silent Hill game including the all-too-familiar fog and unique monsters.
We're all waiting for the Silent Hill 2 remake with bated breath
Whispering Hills features lots of things that go bump in the night, monsters that look familiar, but often have a slight twist to them. The team has done a great job of making their unique creations feel a part of the universe, and they’re genuinely creepy; monsters made of flayed muscles, creatures morphed into abhorrent combinations, we get some cameos from our favourite nurse and the enigma that is Pyramid Head.

Being built on Fallout 4, the mod can feel incredibly immersive with a world built on lidar information. Lidar was used to scan Centralia, PA, the inspiration for the Silent Hill movie and the mod takes that information to build the neighbourhood seen in Whispering Hills.
What’s interesting, this mod leaves a lot of the Fallout 4 content in and simply warps it around the spooky franchise. You still have to find your son Shaun, but you’ll have to travel through Whispering Hills to solve the mystery. You can look at this as a real mash-up of the two games, bringing survival horror to Bethesda’s RPG.
It’s a great mod for fans of Silent Hill, giving us a project that feels rather original and allows fans to relive the brilliance of the franchise while we wait on the next batch of Silent Hill games.
