A recent announcement declared that Fallout 5 has been greenlit by both Microsoft and Bethesda Studios, to rapturous celebrations from fans.
While this development is indeed something to cheer for, it has left fans of The Elder Scrolls wondering where this leaves the sixth game in that franchise.
Bethesda is known for focusing on one game at a time, to some degree, and it’s likely that Fallout 5 is purely in the planning stages and nothing more.
That didn’t stop one fan asking if this reveal means that The Elder Scrolls VI is further ahead in development than we thought.

On Reddit, KushSouffle asked, “What does Fallout 5 being “greenlit” mean for TESVI?” and they further query, “Maybe they really are at the midpoint/tail end of TESVI development. Maybe Microsoft wants to get more games out of Bethesda.”
One Redditor points out that Todd Howard has previously commented on some partial overlap between game development.
They note, “They have always overlapped. It means nothing for TESVI,” and they clip a quote from Howard when he told Geoff Keighley, “We always overlapped. You know, Oblivion into Fallout 3 into Skyrim into Fallout 4 and then Fallout Shelter.”
So much for the theory that The Elder Scrolls VI is further along than thought, however, recent rumours point to a possibly playable demo of the game going around Microsoft, so it’s not all bad news.

“I take it to mean they are approved to begin pre-production. Stuff like concept art, story outlines,” commented JamesIV4.
Another Redditor jumps in to say, “I think we are at the last stages of TESVI production. The concept and outline for Fallout has been done and approved, while they put a year into finishing TESVI.”
This seems like the most likely timeline, and one that will keep everyone’s hopes in check.
