Fallout 5 'greenlit', and fans are losing their heads

Not the update we wanted

Development on Fallout 5 has been an area of speculation for a while now but according to a recent report, the highly-anticipated RPG is even further away than we had initially hoped.

According to a recent report by Windows Central executive editor Jez Corden on the Xbox Two podcast, Fallout 5 has now been “fully greenlit”.

However, he also revealed that it is still unknown which studio will be working in development for the next Fallout entry as Bethesda is hard at work on both The Elder Scrolls VI and an additional Starfield DLC.

It has been a long time since we have received an official update on development for Fallout 5 but unfortunately, this is not the update that fans wanted.

Corden also went on to talk about ZeniMax Online's next MMO, codenamed Blackbird, which was cancelled recently following mass layoffs at Microsoft.

So how does this relate to Fallout 5?

Well, according to Corden, projects such as Blackbird were cancelled in order to put more money into IPs such as Fallout, and more specifically, Fallout 5.

"From what I heard, it was a case of 'Do we want to sink a ton of money into getting this [project Blackbird] to a point where it can compete with the established players in the market, or do we want to allocate that investment towards making Fallout 5?'" Corden explained.

Of course, this update has not been officially announced or confirmed by Bethesda itself but if reports are true, it may not even be Bethesda who will be working on development for Fallout 5.

Bethesda took over development of the Fallout franchise back in the early 2000s and Fallout 3 was its first entry.

Ironically, there have also been rumours that a Fallout 3 remaster is also in the works and we can assume that Bethesda will be working on that at least.

“It’s literally going to be the 2030s when we can play this,” user sirferrell said over on r/GamingLeaksAndRumours.

User DuskyDawn7 joked, “See everyone this same time again in ten years.”

For now, Fallout 5 remains a distant release and it could still be many years until we get our hands on it, especially if it has only just been fully greenlit.
