Sorry Elden Ring fans. It doesn’t look as if that Shadow of the Erdtree shadow drop is happening after all.
This month may not go down quite as fans had hoped. If you cast your mind back to February 2022, that particular month saw Elden Ring released into the world - that year’s GOTY winner. Jump ahead to February 2023 and to celebrate the game’s first anniversary, FromSoftware announced the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. All they gave us to go on was a piece of concept art featuring what appears to be Miquella and Torrent but that was enough to get the hype coursing through our veins. That brings us to the present month of February 2024 which marks the game’s second anniversary.
Lies of P should scratch the itch of Elden Ring fans.
It’s somewhat odd that we’ve had no official updates since Shadow of the Erdtree was announced. We certainly haven’t had a trailer. That being said, the game’s Steam files were recently updated leading many to wonder whether the DLC would shadow drop as a second anniversary surprise. It’s hardly like a game as enormous as Elden Ring needs much in the way of marketing. It just so happens that this month will see two Elden Ring merch collaborations drop, with one reportedly making reference to Shadow of the Erdtree.

As such, us Elden Ring fans have been looking to FromSoftware’s socials with bated breath, wondering if the shadow drop theory is true. Someone may have just stuck a pin in our balloon though. As reported by GamesRadar, Kadokawa - FromSoftware’s parent company - has just released its most recent financial report which features an FAQ entry dedicated to Shadow of the Erdtree. It reads, “We are currently working hard on the development of DLC for Elden Ring but we have not announced a release date at this time."
It doesn’t exactly confirm that it’s not shadow dropping but in the games industry, “We are currently hard at work” usually translates to ‘We’re still working on it and you’ve got a wait to go yet’. Trust me, we’d love to be wrong and see Shadow of the Erdtree drop into our laps before the month is out. Based on this tidbit of information though, you might want to brace yourself for that not to happen.
