Dead Island 2 has sold over one million copies in just three days following its long-awaited launch.
When we talk about developmental hell, perhaps no game better fits that mould than Dead Island 2. Announced during E3 2014, Dead Island 2 was supposed to release the following year.
Sadly, the game was passed from pillar to post. Originally it was being developed by Yager Development, then the project was handed over to Sumo Digital in 2016 and then finally to Dambuster Studios in 2019. The latter of which, would see the project through to completion.
For so many, it was assumed that Dead Island 2 would never see the light of day and if it would, surely it wouldn't be able to live up to a near decade of expectations, right? Well, at least according to the early sales numbers of Dead Island 2, it seems fans can’t get enough of the zombie-infested Los Angeles.

In a press release issued by publisher Deep Silver, the early sales numbers of Dead Island 2 are impressive, to say the least. Since its 21 April 2023 launch, during its first weekend of sale, Dead Island 2 has sold over one million copies across all platforms.
What’s more, during that opening weekend, players have accumulated over 11 million hours, there have been over 28 million player deaths (twice the population of LA), 45 million zombies sliced in half, 756 million zombie limbs hacked and 1.1 billion total of zombies slayed.
In our review of Dead Island 2, we said it’s: “a really solid game with some impressive gore, fun jokes, and sickeningly crunchy combat. It’s exactly the game many of you will have been waiting for, and is quite clearly one of the most technically impressive zombie killing romps on the market.”
