Despite the recent revival of Cyberpunk 2077 and its recent Phantom Liberty expansion, CD Projekt Red has announced it is done with the game and is now turning its attention to a sequel.
It is no secret that Cyberpunk 2077 has had a rocky lifespan. First released in 2020 in a broken, unplayable state, it has had quite the revival over the past three years. With multiple updates and fixes, CD Projekt Red has finally managed to make it the game it always wanted. Add a recent 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty expansion and it has already overtaken Starfield’s player count in recent weeks.

However, despite Cyberpunk 2077 being in the best shape it has ever been, CD Projekt Red are ready to wrap it up and head onto development for its sequel. In an interview with PC Gamer, game director Gabe Amatangelo confirmed the end for their latest project. "2.0 and Phantom Liberty are the last big updates. We'll do a little something more, but those are the last big ones," Amatangelo said. When asked what’s next for the studio, he said, "Then it's Cyberpunk 2. Or 'Orion,' I should say, whatever we end up naming it."

Cyberpunk 2 or ‘Orion’ was first announced in October 2022 claiming it will "prove the full power and potential of the Cyberpunk universe" and "take the Cyberpunk franchise further and continue harnessing the potential of this dark future universe." Bold claims that have yet to be added to elaborated on. No matter what it ends up being titled or when it is expected to be released, let’s hope it will arrive in a better state than its predecessor.
As for Cyberpunk 2077, players can now experience both the 2.0 update as well as the recently released Phantom Liberty expansion. With nods to the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime series as well as new endings for V and Johnny, it’s no wonder the game has gained its highest player base since 2020.
