We all have a video game death that hit us hard. Whether it’s Lee’s in The Walking Dead Game or Joel’s in The Last of Us Part II, sometimes saying goodbye to a virtual character is like saying goodbye to a friend. For one player, Cyberpunk 2077 featured one of the saddest.
Set in the dark future of Night City which is home to corrupt corporations, organised crime and gang violence, it is no surprise that it is a dangerous place to live. That is why the events of Cyberpunk 2077 are less than smooth sailing and not everyone will make it out alive.

For one player, a character death that happens pretty early on in the game “hit like a freight train” and feels like “losing a friend”. This death was that of Jackie’s, our protagonist V’s best friend and partner in crime. During an early mission and heist, V and Jackie find themselves escaping a job gone wrong and Jackie finds himself succumbing to mortal wounds and passing away.

It is our first real introduction to the reality of Cyberpunk 2077’s Night City and it is a moment that stayed with one Reddit user on r/cyberpunkgame.
“Did anyone else like, f**king ball when Jackie died?” They wrote. “I barely know this man, he's a fictional fucking character, and yet... I feel like I just lost a friend that's so close, that they're basically family.
“...Jackie however, I feel like I was genuinely at a friend's f**king funeral, and I was doing my best to say something nice, and be f**king honest about how much this f**king man meant to me. Shit hit me like a f**king freight train man. Did anyone else have a similar reaction?”
As mentioned, Night City is not a place full of sunshine and rainbows and one reply reminds us just that: “I've been playing this game for 3 years, I get it. A lot of people in this sub will if they've been here from the start. Give him a call on the holo, you're in for a surprise. Chin up choom, it only gets worse from here.”
