There are so many racing games out there covering pretty much every franchise you can think of. Whether you want to speed around a track as Kirby, Garfield, or Donald Duck, there’s something out there for pretty much everyone.
The racing game series that probably first springs to mind for many is Mario Kart. Although it’s far from Nintendo’s only venture into the genre, it’s easily the most iconic. Having first debuted on the SNES in the form of Super Mario Kart all the way back in 1992, the series is still going strong today, and for a lot of people out there, the titles are basically party essentials. I’d love to know just how many friendships have been destroyed by Spiny Shells over the years.
Take a look at Super Nintendo World’s real-life Mario Kart ride in action below.
Over on Reddit though, Mario Kart isn’t everyone’s go-to. In a post on r/gaming, SilentThomas wrote: “Unpopular opinion: [Crash Team Racing] trumps Mario Kart by a long shot. The drifting mechanics are just so good.” Clearly, it isn’t an unpopular opinion at all - at the time of writing, the post has garnered almost 30K upvotes. Sorry, Mario.

Others have been discussing their favourite elements of the original 1999 PS1 game: “I remember the single-player adventure mode which had an open-world lobby,” Hoptsnmetal wrote. “And defeating the villains on their own turf to unlock them. Mario Kart still hasn't done anything cool like that to this day,” replied OneGuyJeff. “I loved the bomb weapon in CTR. Instead of shells, you rolled the bomb and exploded it when it was near someone. I felt like it was really powerful,” added OrcOfDoom.
At the end of the day, of course, it all comes down to personal preference. When are we going to get a CTR-themed amusement park ride, though? That’s when the real competition begins.
