Bruce Willis Announces His Retirement Due To Brain Disorder Aphasia

Bruce Willis Announces His Retirement Due To Brain Disorder Aphasia

Ex-wife Demi Moore posted a statement to her Instagram announcing the news.

In some very sad news, actor Bruce Willis has announced his retirement from acting due to the debilitating brain disease known as aphasia.

Many people of a certain age will have grown up with Bruce Willis. Outside of his mega stardom playing beleaguered New York cop John McClane in the Die Hard franchise, he’s well known for his role in movies like Pulp Fiction, as well as his cameo in TV series Friends. His characters were usually tough, caring and charismatic beyond words, he is epitomised as the good guy’s good guy.

On Wednesday, his wife Emma Heming-Willis and ex-wife Demi Moore issued a joint statement explaining that Bruce would be stepping away from acting due to his diagnosis of Aphasia, and that it is “impacting his cognitive abilities.”

As noted by the BBC, aphasia is characterised by a person’s difficulty with language and speaking, and is often caused by damage to the left side of the brain, such as in instances of a stroke. It’s not known if this is the cause of Willis’ diagnosis.

Naturally, this news has led to an outpouring of love and support from fans across the globe. Fellow actor Jamie Lee Curtis wrote on the Instagram post, “Grace and gut! Love to you all!” While Julian Moore simply responded with a heart emoji.

Demi Moore most recently posted a picture of her and Bruce on his birthday only a week ago. The two were smiling, and Bruce looked as magnetic as ever. If that’s anything to go by, hopefully this diagnosis will be as mild as possible, and he gets to enjoy some well earned time away from the spotlight. We wish him and his family nothing but the best. Thank you for the years of entertainment.
