Look, modding communities are great, this we know. Can’t pet the dogs? There’s a mod for that. The game released in an unfinished state, and so was missing features that really should have been there from the start? Guess what? There’s a mod for that too. Most mods, however, don’t aim to completely rebuild the gameplay itself, but what can I say, people are talented.
Say hello to the Battlefield 3: Reality Mod, or perhaps welcome back, as we got our first look at it back in October 2020. Inspired by the Battlefield 2 ‘Project Reality’ mod, it promises a complete gameplay and UI overhaul, which will offer a more tactical and meaningful experience.

The latest trailer premiered just a few days ago (technically last year - damn games journalists and their old news, am I right?), and has given us our first look at what the overhauled gameplay will be like, and it’s looking amazing. It’s built using the VU framework (a community oriented BF3 modding platform), which will offer higher tickrate, built-in server browsing, private server hosting and more.
“Crazy amount of work there! And the result looks incredible, congratulations to the talented team behind. You guys made a 10-year old game look like it got released today,” commented DrShexy. “Looks amazing guys! Just like how Project Reality led to Squad, the future has so many possibilities, I'm really excited to see where this project goes in the future.” said Dan Pennington.
Of course, Battlefield 3 is quite an old game now, having released in 2011, so these changes could be coming just a bit too late to the party for some players. That said, with the current state of Battlefield 2042, perhaps going back to the good old days would make a refreshing change (plus the actual player numbers for 2042 are already dwindling fast).
In the video description, the team revealed that they’ve been struggling to get the mod to a state where it can actually be released, due to a number of problems such as memory leaks, their personal lives, and obviously the pandemic too. Although there’s no release date yet, they shared that the open alpha will start “very soon”, which is exciting. If you’re interested, be sure to keep up with the development over on the team’s website.
