UPDATE 16:52: Amazon has reached out to provide context regarding Jeff Gattis' comments, which can be read below:

"Amazon MGM holds the rights to any future James Bond video games but it’s still too early to discuss future projects. We have a great relationship with IO Interactive and are proud of what we've accomplished together on 007 First Light. Our partners at IO will reveal more about 007 First Light in the near future and we’re looking forward to sharing what’s next." – Amazon spokesperson

We have amended the headline to reflect Amazon's comments, and the original story can be read below.

ORIGINAL STORY: One week after release, a sequel to 007 First Light has been officially greenlit.

007 First Light has become one of the most talked about games of 2026, with everyone from casual gamers to die-hard Bond fans wanting a piece of the action.

While IO Interactive had previously expressed a desire to develop the series into a trilogy, these plans were thrown into disarray following Amazon’s acquisition of MGM in 2025.

Now, it seems that sequel plans are indeed going ahead following a new comment from Amazon, though IO Interactive’s continued involvement in the series has been thrown into doubt.

In an interview with Polygon, Amazon’s general manager of gaming Jeff Gattis confirmed that the tech giant is interested in developing sequels to 007 First Light.

“We did not [make First Light]. We do have a stake in it because we now own the IP,” Gattis told Polygon, “but that IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done.”

While Amazon “didn't have the full rights to this First Light James Bond game,” due to the game being in development years before the MGM acquisition, Gattis said its sequels will be “done by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios.”

Some have taken this statement to mean that IO Interactive won’t be developing the sequel to 007 First Light, but Gattis seems to imply more that Amazon will publish the game with IO Interactive staying as developer.

Due to the deal made prior to Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, IO Interactive is listed as both the developer and publisher of 007 First Light. It was able to self-publish the game similar to how it self-published Hitman 3 in 2021.

With its sequels, it seems that Amazon Games will be listed as the publisher, and it may also mean that more creative control is handed over to the rights holder.

Amazon Could Be The Publisher For 007 First Light's Sequel

Speaking to IO Interactive’s Rasmus Poulsen earlier this year, he said that working with MGM was surprisingly easy, adding that “I would say the discussions have been easy where I expected them to be difficult, and difficult where I expected to be easy.”

But with Amazon now at the helm, things may not be quite as smooth for the Danish video game company as it was previously.

In my 007 First Light review, I said that it is “finally the game that gets Bond right,” and that “IO Interactive has taken care to develop a story that feels wholly like a classic Bond adventure brought into the modern age, while also injecting its own writing strengths to ensure the narrative is cohesive and charming.”

So, a sequel to 007 First Light simply wouldn’t happen without IO Interactive’s input. And given Amazon Game Studios’ spotty track record with its previous games (like King of Meat and New World), it might be easier for it to simply let IO Interactive do its thing.
