If you’re a fan of medieval history and immersive sim video games like Skyrim, Dishonored, Thief, and Deus Ex, there’s another title you really need to check out. Released in 2018 and with a sequel on the way, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the ultimate way to experience a medieval peasant’s quest to become a knight in shining armour.
You can jump in for an absolute bargain right now, especially on PC. Kingdom Come: Deliverance Royal Edition is just £5.29 at GOG, the platform owned and run by Cyberpunk 2077 developer and publisher CD Projekt Red. Along with a huge world and lengthy base game, all of the game’s downloadable expansions are featured in the Royal Edition, including: Treasures of the Past, From the Ashes, The Amorous Adventures of Bold Sir Hans Capon, Band of Bastards, and A Woman's Lot.

Following the story of Henry, the game is set in the Bohemia of 1403 — a predecessor of today’s Czech Republic — with a painstakingly-crafted world aiming to simulate the time period as accurately and immersively as possible. When an invading force sweeps into Henry’s town and slaughters everyone in it, he escapes and begins a campaign of vengeance against the people responsible.
This first-person action-adventure game features a clever approach to sword fights that strives to mimic real-world medieval combat, with your strike selection and timing being essential to victory. Over time you’ll gain mastery over this challenging system as Henry’s story progresses, tying your own development to the protagonist’s as you become a more accomplished and deadly knight.
It’s got a 4.1 out of 5 average rating from verified players at GOG, with players praising the approach to realism, the storyline, and the rewarding combat system. “Yes, this game is realistic. And yes, this game is hard. But in a positive way and I loved it!” said one five-star review.
“Kingdom Come: Deliverance is, together with Red Dead Redemption 2 and Witcher 3, my favourite game of this generation, and probably of all time,” said another player. “If you have good PC, patience and ability to appreciate something fresh and immersive, you will very likely love it.”

Another said: “If you like history, realistic gameplay, medieval time period, you're going to love this game so much!”
However, some have struggled to get on board with the combat: “Kingdom Come: Deliverance claims to offer a realistic medieval experience, but its combat system is far from it. The controls are clunky and unresponsive, making even basic moves a chore.” Another player added: “Game looks good, realisim is great but the combat system is terrible and the game does very little to explain how it works.”
If you like medieval settings but don’t mind a bit of magic and monsters thrown in, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition is just £8.74 on Steam, featuring hundreds of hours of immersive gameplay and excellent storytelling. For another fantastic immersive sim, albeit with a highly stylised world and fantastical elements you won’t find in Kingdom Come, check out Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition for £44.99.
At just £5.29, however, Kingdom Come: Deliverance Royal Edition is surely worth a go.
