Steam has a bevy of free games to check out and recently a few gems have been added that you simply must check out. As always, we’re here to point out some crackers and bangers that are worth your time, even if you’re just checking them out for an evening or two - they’re free, it doesn’t matter if you only invest a little time.
Spectre Divide
Advert
Getting a free-to-play multiplayer shooter is always a nice treat and Spectre Divide is grabbing players as the game evolves from its recent release. It’s based on players controlling two bodies in real-time, while fighting in a 3V3 battle, giving each player two lives to play out. It’s fast-paced, bright, colourful fun, and it’s remarkably tactical, too. If you’re looking for something to play with your mates, it’s worth investigating this one as it will only get better and grow further with age.
Stardrop
Sometimes life is made better by a little green gumdrop wandering around collecting lost star droplets. In this whimsical and charming little game, Stardrop will have you exploring and looking for hidden items, channeling the 3D platformers of old. With lovely cel-shaded visuals that lean into a comic book aesthetic, this short game instantly feels both nostalgic and familiar. It’s cute, it’s simple, it doesn’t rely on anything flashy, it’s just great platforming done well.
Kerker
Advert
Speaking of feeling old school, Kerker evokes those early days of dungeon-crawling with its chunky graphics and approachable gameplay. Essentially, it’s an FPS roguelike that powers you up as you explore, kill monsters, and collect valuable loot. It’s not an overly long game, and with only eight enemy types you might get the hang of it quite quickly, however, it’s worth checking out if you’re wanting something simple to pick up, yet hard to master. The quirky designs of the enemies are lovely and it’s screams out PS2-era novelty.
Sorelle
Another 3D platformer comes in the form of Sorelle, which adds a fair few puzzles into the mix. Three protagonists are available, each with distinct powers to utilise throughout and solve puzzles. However, what stands out the most are the gorgeous Sicilian-inspired environments that will bring a touch of summer as we turn into autumn. There’s a heartwarming story at the core of this one and it will make you smile with the attention to detail on display. It’s not too challenging, nor does it outstay its welcome. You’ll reach the end and want to play all over again.
Floodcore
Advert
More puzzles abound in this adventure through a flooded world but that devastation doesn’t make for a bleak place, as everything comes to life in bold colour. This could be seen more as a proof of concept as it’s very short, but there’s no denying it will stay with you and you’ll likely yearn for more from the developers. The puzzles are unique and clever without being too obtuse and there are hints of a story that could be further explored should enough people love their time with this one. Floodcore is remarkably relaxing too - a very chill ticket to escapism.
