EA has been promising us a new Need For Speed game for a few years now, but have been sparse with official details as the company moves around development.
Criterion Games, developers of numerous Burnout titles and Need For Speed: Most Wanted, is developing the as yet untitled game. However, when Battlefield 2042 began flopping around like a fish on land, EA moved the team at Criterion to clean up duty, and the next entry into the racing franchise was delayed. This led many to question what was going on with development, though rumours suggested that the 2021 game was moved to a late 2022 or early 2023 release.
The last Need For Speed game was the 2020 remaster of Hot Pursuit which you can check out in the trailer below.

While we are still very much lacking in official information, there has been some news on development. According to journalist Jeff Grubb on GiantBomb’s podcast GrubbSnax (which has been transcribed by VGC), development has changed again. While it was originally slated to release simultaneously on PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, according to Grubb development has moved to focus on only the latest generation of consoles.
“Need for Speed is still coming this year… that’s true, that game should be coming in November. If you are a Need for Speed fan who has bought a next-gen console, here’s some news; it’s next-gen only. They are shifting to next-gen only.”
While the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S released in 2020 many consumers have struggled to get their hands on the new console releases. Despite a shortage of hardware, many developers are moving towards only developing for the newest consoles as the older generation begins being phased out. However, with its delayed development some fans are certain to be disappointed that they can’t get their hands on the latest Need For Speed whenever it releases.
