Star Wars fans rejoice, because The Acolyte officially returns next week.

Despite showing some promise, such as introducing the first-ever live-action version of Darth Plagueis and having an interesting timeline of the High Republic era, Disney Plus series The Acolyte was arguably let down by its goofy writing.

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, while I appreciate that it hasn’t always been storytelling bliss over the years, the dumb Jedi of The Acolyte and its unlikable lead character, Mae/Osha Aniseya, played a role in its rapid demise.

Sure, it had some saving graces, such as the character known as “The Stranger” and the brief appearance of Indara, which provided some of the series' better moments, not to mention the aforementioned reveal of Darth Plaguesis.

After just one season, The Acolyte was cancelled on Disney Plus and many fans were heartbroken. At the time of writing, there has been no indication that the series will be making a triumphant return.

However, it may not be returning as a live-action series, but next week, it makes a comeback of sorts with a brand new novel, Star Wars: The Acolyte: The Crystal Crown, written by Tessa Gratton and published by Penguin Books.

“While their Jedi Masters clean up a political mess left behind by one of their own, Jedi Padawan Jecki and her least favourite fellow Padawan Yord are drawn into a planet-wide coming-of-age ritual as featured guests,” reads the synopsis of the novel.

“But when things unexpectedly turn deadly, Jecki and Yord will have to use all of their abilities and work together to keep each other and their new friends safe,” it concludes.

Star Wars: The Acolyte: The Crystal Crown will be available from 29 July 2025, both in physical form and digitally.

It might not be the return many fans wanted, but I suppose it’s better than nothing. The Acolyte is still available to stream on Disney Plus.
