Star Wars' new Phantom Menace sequel makes Qui-Gon's death way more heartbreaking

Gon too soon!

A Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace sequel has made Qui-Gon Jinn’s death all the more heartbreaking.

While Star Wars: The Phantom Menace isn't viewed as favourably as some of the other movies in the franchise, it had its moments or at the least, fan-favourite characters. For starters, we had its central villain Darth Maul who at the time was having his strings pulled by Sheev Palpatine.

We were also introduced to a young Obi-Wan Kenobi played by Ewan McGregor as well as his Jedi Master, Qui-Gon Jinn played by Liam Neeson, the latter of which is the subject of this article. Sadly, however, Qui-Gon Jinn’s role in the live-action Star Wars universe was more short-lived than fans hoped.

During the concluding moments of The Phantom Menace in a heated battle with Darth Maul, neither lived to tell the tale or so we thought. Darth Maul still lives, but his fate could be worse than death.

As for Qui-Gon Jinn, I suppose he can take comfort in being a Jedi ghost playing a game of Dejarik with Yoda, Kenobi and Anakin. That being said, if you are still feeling sad about the death of Qui-Gon Jinn, then prepare to feel heartbroken.

As reported by slashfilm.com, in a new Star Wars novel, Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss, before the death of Qui-Gon Jinn, he sent a message to Mace Windu to take on missions that he was unable to finish, because of being dead and all that.

Not only did these missions offer physical challenges for Mace Windu having to battle some of the galaxy's most villainous scum but he also had to come to terms with the death of Qui-Gon Jinn and mend his broken heart.

At the time, Mace Windu was also struggling with whether he made the right choice to join the Jedi Council. Being the wise owl that he is, Qui-Gon Jinn knew this before his death and by sending Mace Windu on those missions, he was able to come to terms with his inner struggles.

With the power of hindsight, perhaps coming to terms with being one with the Jedi Council wasn't the best choice for Mace Windu after all, considering that he got thrown out of a window by Sheev Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith.
