The Star Wars universe is never short of fan theories and in a lot of cases, those theories end up being a lot better than what’s delivered in its modern iterations.
One such fan theory suggests that Sheev Palpatine who would later become Darth Sidious in the Star Wars movies, could have been another Sith Lord all along, namely Darth Plagueis. We know it's unlikely to be true but seeing as it seems most Star Wars movie and series makers can dabble with lore how they please, I guess anything is possible.

So, let’s hear this fan theory out. As reported by cbr.com, it’s mentioned that in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine tells an impressionable Anakin Skywalker about the “Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise” revealed to be Palpatine’s old master.

Darth Plageuis had a lust to discover the secret of eternal life and is said to have channelled the power to create new life on demand, a power that came to vision in a recent Star Wars tale.
What’s more, in Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, it’s revealed Darth Sidious also has a lust for eternal life. Sidious explored the thesis of transference, a power to transfer consciousness from one body to another, essentially being able to live forever.
With that in mind, fans on Reddit have discussed the theory of “What if Darth Sidious IS Darth Plagueis?” exclaimed earthisadonuthole. “We know that Sidious claims he killed Plagueis in his sleep, and we also know that Plagueis had found some way to achieve immortality.”

“The assumption is that Sidious killed him and took the knowledge,” they continued to explain. “Since we see Sidious try to goad Luke and later Rey into killing him, it’s clear that to transfer bodies he has to be killed in hate, which makes sense for the Sith. So what if Plagueis goaded Sidious into killing him and possessed his body, and it’s been him all along?”
“All of that makes sense except the scene where Sidious is explaining to Anakin that “ironic he could not save himself from death”, replied Asctkd. “They have left it vague or worded it differently if they wanted this to be a possibility. It’s possible but the storytelling is basically telling you it’s Sidious, not Plagueis.”
“He didn’t want Luke to kill him. He wanted Luke to turn to the dark side and be his apprentice,” said Morley_Lives with another user adding “You need to read Darth Plagueis.”
Who knows, perhaps someone at Disney will pinch this theory one day and put it into action in a new Star Wars movie or series. Only time will tell.
