Roughly three years after it was first announced, we finally have confirmation that the live-action adaptation of BioWare’s extra-terrestrial repopulation simulator Mass Effect is actually moving forward… but it’s not all good news, so strap yourself in.
Although they had previously warned fans that yesterday’s N7 Day event, a date on which BioWare usually has some fun Mass Effect-related news for their fans, would be a little more low-key this year following the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, it turns out that they did still have a little something up their sleeve.
Yesterday, Variety’s Joe Otterson happened to exclusively learn that the Amazon Mass Effect TV series would still be moving forward - three years after the streaming giant revealed their plans to adapt the franchise back in 2021. And they happened to learn that on N7 Day? Crazy coincidence, huh?

Variety also learned of a few of the names attached to the project, including that of its writer and executive producer.
“Daniel Casey is set to write and executive produce the adaptation…” Otterson revealed. “Karim Zreik will executive produce under his Cedar Tree Productions banner, with Ari Arad and EA’s Michael Gamble also executive producing.”
Now, this is where the less-than-stellar news starts because personally… I’m not too confident in the writing team currently attached to the project.
Daniel Casey doesn’t have enough of a portfolio to truly discern whether or not they’ll be the man for the job, as his credits currently consist of a bunch of short films that received average reviews and, uh, Fast & Furious 9.

No idea how someone goes from writing the screenplays for a bunch of no-name short films to suddenly pumping out the screenplay for the ninth instalment in one of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, but clearly someone out there is vouching for Casey’s skills.
Summing up the Mass Effect mythos in a few episodes would be a mighty task for any of the most talented screenwriters currently working in Hollywood though, so I hope that Amazon knows what they’re doing here.
Still, their work on the Fallout series was extremely impressive so I’m still holding out hope that this could be good. God, please let it be good.
