Marvel fans are divided over a potential return of Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff aka, the Black Widow in the MCU.
Unlike fellow Marvel Avengers members, such as Captain America, Thor, Hulk and Captain Marvel, Black Widow and Hawkeye have no superpowers. We know that Iron Man has no such powers either but he is a genius, billionaire and playboy philanthropist, after all.
Check out the Black Widow trailer below!
However, while Black Widow and Hawkeye lack in the superpowers department, they more than make up for it by having a level of strength, agility, fighting skills and tactical prowess more than most humans, which is why they’re amongst the most popular Marvel Comics characters ever.

Before I proceed, please be advised that I am about to mention major spoilers for the 2019 Marvel movie, Avengers: Endgame. So consider this to be your last spoiler warning.
In one of the most emotional scenes in the MCU, Black Widow sacrifices her life to not only allow her best friend Hawkeye to live but also to acquire the Soul Stone from planet Vormir in an attempt to prevent Thanos from obtaining all the Infinity Stones for the Infinity Gauntlet.
Since that time, other than in the 2021 prequel movie, Black Widow, we’ve not seen Natasha Romanoff and as much as some fans love her character in the MCU, many believe that she should not return otherwise her sacrifice has lost some meaning.
There have been rumours that Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow could be set to return to the MCU by the time we reach Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and/or Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).

Whether these reports come to fruition or if Scarlett Johansson returns as a different MCU multiverse character like Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom remains to be seen.
“Scarlett Johansson Set to Return in Marvel's 'Avengers: Doomsday' and 'Secret Wars’,” read the headline of an article from Maxblizz.com, shared by Redditor marvelkidy.

“I think it's becoming pretty clear "Doom" will have his own team of Avengers,” said KageXOni87 with Brilliant_Draw_3147 adding “Yep. This is exactly where it's going. The original six Avengers as evil variants.”
“It would be kind of neat if it was dark versions of the MCU OG Avengers and a handful of legacy characters,” replied a Reddit user.
“I love the OG cast but I’m becoming less optimistic about Avengers: Doomsday because it feels like they’re just relying on Infinity Saga nostalgia,” exclaimed sheetsofsaltywood.
Redditor Brogdon made a very interesting prediction that Scarlet Johansson won't return as an alternate Black Widow but instead as Doctor Doom’s daughter, Victoria von Doom.

We can only speculate at this time whether Scarlett Johansson will return to the MCU until we get official confirmation from either Disney or Marvel, but at this point, I doubt anything would surprise me.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to be released on 1 May 2026 and Avengers: Secret Wars on 7 May 2027.
