Harry Potter being a polarising topic is by no means a new phenomenon.
Ever since J.K. Rowling’s opinions on gender identity became public knowledge, the magical experience of Harry Potter has been soured. For some, permanently.
This has resulted in various alterations to the franchise, most notably the name change of the series’ sport.

Although Quidditch started off as a fictional activity, it soon transitioned to a real life sport played across college campuses in the US.
Due to Rowling’s “anti-trans positions”, the International Quidditch Association changed the name to Quadball, as detailed in The Guardian.
Have you played Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions?
“Boy, they really showed her,” joked Redditor Fugga6969.

While this isn’t a new development – it happened in 2022 – the fandom still has conflicting opinions about this decision.
Not to mention, a great dislike of the new name.
User SirShmooey said, “‘Quadball’ just sounds like a terrible medical affliction.”
Despite “Dorkball” being a preferred name on the r/news discussion, some fans believe that the switch to a new name has nothing to do with Rowling.

“They’ve been wanting to change the name for years because of trademark laws,” argued ADarwinAward. “They were talking about a rename long before any controversy.”
“They want to be able to sell it as a sport, or earn money somehow, so they have to change the name to not get sued. This is just a cover for them,” added PotatoCurryPuff.
As you can see for yourselves, the reason why this happened is largely debated.
No matter your personal opinions, this change highlights a cultural shift towards the franchise.

Even though the TV series and its recasting of favourite characters is leading to some “perfect” actor choices, it’s fair to argue that there’s a general unease in the Harry Potter community.
Hopefully, the HBO adaptation will help recapture the magic of this franchise as more associated activities attempt to remove themselves from any Rowling connection.
