The casting of any new superhero always comes with a certain level of discourse. That said, Batman fans seem particularly unsettled regarding the DCU’s casting plans.
Or should we say, the apparent lack of casting plans...?
When it comes to who will become the next Dark Knight, there’s a lot of speculation with few actual facts.

Speaking of DC, have you watched the trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux?
Fans recently became hyped over a new Dark Knight candidate that DC appeared to name.
However, an official casting of Batman, as of yet, hasn’t happened. Or if it has, DC is keeping very quiet about it.

Consequently, Batman fans feel that DC has lost its way somewhat when it comes to prioritising iconic superheroes.
According to Reddit user Key-Equal933, “Despite Brave and Bold being a couple of years off, WBD/Gunn need to cast their Batman now.”
“Batman/Bruce is the most popular DC character and, despite the DCU's focus on B/C characters, will be the main protagonist of the DCU and will certainly have more DCU appearances than any other single character,” they added.
Their argument ended by saying that the DCU should make casting Batman its “top priority”.

However, despite giving such an impassioned speech, not all Batman fans are in agreement.
“Believe it or not, I think they should actually hold off a while on Batman (and I’m pretty sure that’s what Gunn wants to do),” commented happybuffalowing.
“Develop some other heroes and hint at his existence in the meantime, let the Reeves movies run their course at least a little more and then drop the bomb when the time is right.”
Further down in the comments section, another Redditor said, “They don't need to cast for a movie that isn't close to going into production.”

On the flip side of this, other fans did side with the OP, saying, “Batman is the single most important casting for DCU. If they miss the mark (in an important way, not a little), DCU is going to suffer.”
Considering plot details for The Batman 2 have been officially teased, maybe casting the new Bats sooner rather than later isn’t a bad idea.
However, just because plot points have been hinted at doesn’t mean we’re close to understanding the final vision for the film.
Besides, there are other DCU irons in the fire.

For now then, a new Dark Knight has yet to be found.
