After all this time, we now know

Mysterious monsters destroying a town doesn’t lend itself to being a film trope that offers many answers. Yet, Cloverfield’s director has decided to, finally, tell us the origin of film’s enigmatic creation.

As avid film fans, we’ve occasionally wondered where the 2008 Cloverfield monster came from; it didn’t keep any of us up at night, but we were curious after all this time. Apparently, the director, Matt Reeves, sensed our quiet need for answers and has relented.

During a SYFY interview, Reeves revealed that the “baby” we all see in the final moments of the film, crashing down to earth, has always had a backstory, even though that wasn’t explored in the movie.

Check out the Cloverfield trailer to be reminded of its brilliance, and to think of that poor creature we cruelly assumed evil

“When we revisit that footage where they’re on the Ferris wheel at the end, you can see the meteor flying down and hitting the ocean. That’s actually the beginning of the baby being on Earth.”

Reeves went on to explain that this poor baby was experiencing “separation anxiety” and thus acting out by destroying everything. “For me, the big secret was that the monster was a baby and was experiencing separation anxiety. The reason the monster was freaking out is because they were having fits based on looking for their mother.”

Now we all feel bad that it was getting shot at. Though, let’s be honest, if you rampage through a city and kill thousands of people, the military is going to show up and try to kill you, baby or not. Still, it puts a unique twist on the story all these years later, while also showing that monsters are just as scared of us as we are of them. What a lesson to learn...!

Could the baby appear in the Cloverfield 4? It’s more than feasible, especially as the next film is said to be a direct follow-on from the events of the first film. However, with Reeves working on other projects as priority, the future of the space baby will remain still unknown.
