The Legend of Zelda series is set to return next year and in more ways than one, but the series’ next game instalment already sounds controversial.

2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the Legend of Zelda series and yet the franchise’s big day passed with hardly a word or a whisper.

There’s no way Nintendo doesn’t have something big planned though and word on the street is it’s a full-on remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

That’s exciting for sure but new leaked details on the unannounced project actually raise more concerns than anything else.

Ocarina Of Time Remake Development Is Being Split

The Ocarina of Time remake first surfaced a few months ago and it’s said Nintendo was livid when it leaked.

Later it was said Nintendo leaked the project itself to expose potential insiders but it’s now being claimed the remake is indeed real and will anger a lot of gamers.

According to Nash Weedle, shared by Hugo Gaming on XCancel, the Ocarina of Time remake will be built from the ground up with collaboration from Monolith Studios.

That’s all normal but what really stood out was the claim it’ll be a remake told in two parts, seemingly taking inspiration from Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Final Fantasy VII has been broken up into three chapters, those being’ Final Fantasy VII Remake, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and a currently announced third game.

The Ocarina of Time remake is said to be adapting Young Link’s story into one game, and Adult Link’s story into the other.

Take this with a pinch of salt of course because while it makes sense chronologically it doesn’t make a lick of sense as far as gameplay is concerned.

The entire premise of Ocarina of Time is Link travelling between the present and the future to thwart Ganondorf’s plans to take over Hyrule.

There are certain activities and items that can only be acquired by Young Link with the help of Adult Link, and vice-versa.

Now it sounds like that mechanic is being taken out to create a more linear RPG, which honestly sounds dreadful.

The rest of the leak stated that the Young Link game will launch later this year whereas the Adult Link game will launch later, possibly 2027.

An official announcement for the game is now expected in an unconfirmed Nintendo Direct scheduled for June. Again, take all of this with a pinch of salt.

Ocarina of Time is widely regarded as not just the best Zelda game but one of the greatest games ever made. Regardless of your opinion in that debate it’s easy to see why Nintendo would be interested in a remake especially for the series’ 40th anniversary.

However a remake done in this way sounds like an awful idea, and if it’s true gamers are not going to be happy about having to buy two separate releases for one game.

Aside from this bold new instalment in the franchise we’re also anticipating the live-action film currently in the works with Sony Pictures, debuting in cinemas next year.

First-looks at the film have inspired confidence in us and like the remake it seems the film will be adapting the story of Ocarina of Time, so that’s exciting.
