The Last Of Us prequel game leaves fans divided

This would be a big gamble

Was there ever a more divided fanbase than the one that belongs to The Last of Us? Shall there be a third part? If so, who should the story follow? Was Joel right? Questions after questions.

When it comes to a potential The Last of Us Part III, fans are more divided than ever before. Some wish to see another instalment while others are happy with how the story ended in The Last of Us Part II.

Others would like to see a third instalment but have it follow brand-new characters while others wish for a prequel that could star some of our favourite characters and what they got up to before the events of The Last of Us.

As of right now, The Last of Us Part III has not yet been confirmed but a discussion over on r/thelastofus has made us question whether a potential prequel would be right for the Naughty Dog series.

“A prequel game would not work,” user JadenRuffle wrote back in 2024.

“A lot of people who don’t like Part II say it should have been a prequel with Joel and Tommy during the start of the outbreak. Why would anyone want this?”

They go on to explain that due to Joel’s job as a hunter before the events of the first game, this is not something that they think a prequel would benefit from showing.

Not only that but the game would not feature Ellie who you could argue is definitely the beating heart of the entire franchise.

“Also, Ellie is clearly the star of this franchise. A game without her would be pretty sad—unless it’s a spin off with unrelated characters that could work but anything mainline without her would just feel empty,” the continued.

However, it seems as though this opinion has left fans feeling divided once more.

“*Looks over at RDR2 and how people thought playing as someone other than John Marston wouldn't work either*,” the top comment by user jish5 reads.

Another user had an interesting suggestion for a third instalment.

“Yeah, a prequel doesn’t work IMO.

However I’ve always thought a spinoff of the outbreak happening in a different country would be awesome, like the chaos of outbreak day set in packed Hong Kong, also the military and governments in other countries would have handled the outbreak and QZ different than America so it lends itself to a somewhat different style and story.”

It remains to be seen what is next for The Last of Us franchise but it seems as though a prequel would be a big gamble if it goes ahead.
