The Last of Us is currently awaiting its third part which will probably be the last. Don’t worry though, Sony will probably remaster and remake the series another dozen times if there are no plans for spin-offs.

Speaking of spin-offs, we all remember the Last of Us multiplayer game don’t we? Despite nearing completion, it was ripped away from us at the last second.

Unfortunately, we’ll never know if it was actually going to be good or not. However, we can at least take comfort in the fact that a successor is on the way…

The Last of Us Multiplayer Mode Makes A Bold Return

While Naughty Dog presumably works on The Last of Us Part III work is being done on The Last of Us Part II to make it a co-op experience.

This work comes from Speclizer on X and while the idea is to allow two players to experience the single-player story together it’s actually got potential for PvP too.

“Took a few days but finally got hit detection and a custom death handler working on players for the TLOU 2 Multiplayer mod” said Speclizer in their most recent post. “At this point, we have everything we need to create a PvP mode.”

It’s slowly becoming exactly what The Last of Us Online was trying to be before its cancellation.

Again, the core idea behind the mode is to let you play through the story with a friend but some fans are so excited by this development that they’re actually hoping the project changes course.

“Co-op is cool, but please… this seems easier and us TLOU PvP’ers are literally starving” said YamaMX. “Smallest pre-alpha mode is all we need while you work your magic, bless you and your efforts”

Simmons71277 added, “It would be cool if you could get the maps from the 'no return' game mode. Those maps are basically PvP-ready”

It would be quite the achievement to get a PvP mode working but it also comes with its own risks. It’s unclear how Sony would respond but it’d probably move to get the mod shut down if it got too much traction.

We’ll be watching this mod with great interest though, as we’re getting closer and closer to The Last of Us Online long after it got unfairly canned.

What’s Next For The Last of Us?

As we said before, The Last of Us Part III is seemingly in the works but there’s also a rumour of another game centred around Joel.

We’ve also got the third season of the HBO series on the way, which will adapt Abby’s story from The Last of Us Part II and presumably the finale, where Ellie and Abby go their separate ways.

Aside from that, it’s unclear what else Sony has planned for the IP as The Last of Us Part III is expected to wrap up the series in a neat but bloody bow.
