The Elder Scrolls 6-Skyrim release date gap leaves gamers more frustrated than ever

Never been more aware of my own mortality

It is six years on since The Elder Scrolls 6’s existence was confirmed but despite the highly-anticipated sequel apparently being in development, fans are starting to think it may never release.

First announced during 2018’s E3 event, the confirmation of The Elder Scrolls 6 was a big hit, which is unsurprising considering it is the first The Elder Scrolls entry since the award-winning Skyrim.

Check out the 2018 E3 The Elder Scrolls VI trailer below!

Joined alongside a (very short) teaser trailer, fans were overjoyed that they would soon be able to explore the lands of Skyrim and beyond once more but after a six year wait with little to no information, excitement has turned into frustration.

The reason for Bethesda’s radio silence is not really known, except that the studio has probably prioritized other recent releases such as 2023’s Starfield.

However, now that Starfield and its subsequent DLC are out in the world, you would at least have thought we would have a new The Elder Scrolls 6 update.

The frustrations came to a head recently over on r/ElderScrolls where one poster said, “I miss the days when games didn't take a literal human generation between releases.”

Their comment was joined by a screenshot of the time period between the releases of The Elder Scrolls: Arena in 1994 to The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in 2006.

The infographic shows that the longest period between Bethesda releases over this timeframe was just six years before The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim arrived in 2011.

Now it has been thirteen years and counting that we have not received a new mainline The Elder Scrolls title so it is perhaps not surprising that fans are struggling.

The comments were soon filled with TES fans lamenting their lost childhoods with the Reddit thread soon turning into a virtual therapy session.

“I was in my early 20s when Skyrim came out and went to the mall at midnight to pick up a copy on 11/11/11, played for three hours then slept for two before I had to get up for a morning shift,” the top comment read.

“Now I’m typically in bed at 8pm watching TV on my laptop and I’ll be in my 40s before the next one comes out.”

It remains to be seen when we will receive our next update, or even a release date, from Bethesda but it couldn’t come soon enough.
