After years of waiting, the launch of Starfield is nearly upon us and as the excitement builds, fans are itching for more juicy details on the upcoming sci-fi RPG.
The latest news to come from a galaxy that may or may not be far, far away are related to Starfield’s various religions as well as the factions that you can join. Religions and factions will of course be nothing new to Bethesda fans, as it’s something that has featured prominently in the likes of Fallout and The Elder Scrolls.
Check out the Starfield gameplay trailer below!
However, with Starfield being Bethesda’s first proper major RPG on Xbox Series X|S, fans may be expecting a little more depth and choice in how they choose to play the game and explore the galaxy. Firstly, let’s begin with the religions. In total, there will be three religions in Starfield.

The confirmed religions in Starfield are:
- Enlightened - It seems that Enlightened is Starfield’s answer to Scientology and is a fierce rival to Sanctum Universum.
- Sanctum Universum - Little is known about Sanctum Universum, other than they appear to be a cheerful lot and are particularly welcoming to traders. That being said, if they are fierce rivals to Enlightened, perhaps it's a group not as cheerful as it seems.
- The Great Serpent - My initial thought is that The Great Serpent might be a tad evil like Slytherin from Harry Potter, however, that appears to be far from the truth. If you join this religion, you will be required to jump a lot. If you don’t jump on a regular basis, you will lose health points, for some reason.
So far nine factions have been confirmed for Starfield, though it seems that not all will be joinable. Those factions include:
- Constellation - Located in the Alpha Centauri system, we’ve seen more of this faction than any other and it even has a snazzy Collector’s Edition named after it. This will likely be your first faction, especially if you favour space exploration. Constellation is joinable.
- Crimson Fleet - Discovered in the Kryx system, the oddly named Crimson Feet is considered to be one of the main factions and by the sounds of things, this will be an eeeevil group of bandits. Crimson Feet is joinable.
- Ecliptic Mercenaries - Little is known about Ecliptic Mercenaries, but it looks to be a group of bounty hunters. Ecliptic Mercenaries is not joinable, sadly.
- Freestar Collective - Found in the Cheyenne system, the Freestar Collective is one of the largest factions in the game consisting of loose confederation settlers. Freestar Collective is joinable.
- House Va’ruun - Found in the Sol system, little is known about House Va’ruun other than its described as a group of “fanatical religious zealots”. House Va’runn is not joinable.
- Ryujin Industries - Discovered in the Volii system, Ryujin Industries is some kind of corporation that isn't easy to join, but if you’re selected, it might be worth the effort. Ryujin Industries is joinable.
- Spacers - Found in the Porrima system, all we know at this time, is that this may be a particularly nasty group of space adventurers. Spacers is not joinable.
- United Colonies - Found in the Alpha Centauri system, United Colonies is also one of the other largest factions in the game. If you favour the military and politics, then United Colonies could be for you. United Colonies is joinable.
- XenoFresh Corporation - Like Ryujin Industries, XenFresh Corporation can be discovered in the Volii system. If you want dodgy dealings and quick cash, then you might want to sign up for the XenoFresh Corporation. Thankfully, this faction features no Xenomorph aliens, right? XenoFresh Corporation is joinable.
Starfield will be released on 6 September 2023 for PC and Xbox Series X|S. Unless you’ve pre-ordered the Premium or Constellation Edition, in which case, your date will be 1 September. Starfield will also launch on Xbox Game Pass.
