Announced during the Xbox Games Showcase, everyone’s favourite video game dragon is back with Spyro, and he swoops back into our homes in 2027.

The Spyro franchise is one of the most iconic in the video game industry, ever since it first launched on the original PlayStation in 1998. Since that time, we’ve seen plenty of sequels and spin-offs across multiple platforms and generations.

However, not taking into account the fantastic remastered collection (which actually felt more like remakes) with Spyro Reignited Trilogy in 2018, it’s been 19 years since the last new game. Time really has flown by.

It’s Been a Patient Wait for Spyro Fans!

In terms of brand new games in the series, the last was The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon in 2008. So, with it being nearly two decades, to say that fans have waited patiently would be an understatement, especially as we’ve seen a few Crash Bandicoot releases within that time.

In terms of core gameplay and what to expect in the world of Spyro: A Realm Beyond, the short trailer that featured a snippet of gameplay and mostly cinematics didn't reveal all that much.

However, during a developer Q&A with Toys for Bob after the trailer was revealed to the press, they did confirm that Spyro: A Realm Beyond is powered by Unreal Engine 5. We also know that this will be developed by the same squad of people that brought us the aforementioned Spyro Reignited Trilogy, so it should be in good hands.

Going by my own assumption, it does seem like Spyro: A Realm Beyond might have a sandbox approach, perhaps similar to a previous Toys for Bob franchise, Skylanders. What’s more, the name “Realm Beyond” could also imply that there may be some form of multidimensional shenanigans. But only time will tell.

Hopefully, this revival of the beloved classic dragon will not only be a delight for fans who have been with Spyro for many years, but with a bit of luck, it will serve as a great introduction to welcome in a new legion of fans, too. Let’s just hope that Spyro: A Realm Beyond does this iconic series justice and can step out of Crash Bandicoot’s shadow next year.

When is Spyro: A Realm Beyond Release Date?

At this time, Spyro: A Realm Beyond does not have a concrete release date, but we do know that it’s currently scheduled to arrive in spring 2027. As for its platforms, it will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass.
