The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has just received a new mod which massively expands the Thieves Guild questline.

While not required to beat the main story, the Thieves Guild is one of the most memorable side questlines you can play in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

With it having one of the best stories and most interesting characters, many players end up playing the Thieves Guild questline even if they’re not strictly playing as a thief.

However, one modder has massively expanded the questline with some simple changes, allowing greater roleplaying elements to come into play.

Titled ‘Speaking With Silence Plus Plus - A Thieves Guild Roleplay Expansion’, the mod by author Flowrifto makes some simple changes to the Speaking With Silence quest, with some huge consequences as a result.

Speaking With Silence Plus Plus Adds A Whole New RPG Experience To The Thieves Guild

The change is simple: Mercer Frey is no longer an essential character at the start of Speaking With Silence. This means that he can be killed much earlier in the questline at Snow Veil Sanctum, and will be permanently removed from the game if he dies.

From here, several changes can happen. For starters, you can take the skeleton key from his corpse right away. You can also get expelled from the Thieves Guild as a result, or even become its archnemesis.

The mod adds new dialogue options and new scenes which depend on your choices, and can result in more variations on the questline such as making Brynjolf the guildmaster.

Even if you keep him alive, there are some changes to Mercer Frey’s behaviour during the quest. For starters, he’ll no longer follow you throughout Tamriel until you finish it. There are also consequences for taking your time, so there’s no longer assuming Frey will be waiting for you at Snow Veil Sanctum forever.

Finally, the mod also features an alternative ending for the Thieves Guild questline, where you must hunt Karliah across Skyrim.

“This mod inception stems from a mad idea,” writes Flowrifto. “What if Skyrim let you kill anybody AND responded to your choices to the best of its abilities? I made a couple of mods for myself with some simple NPCs tied to a single quest... And then I tried to handle the fate of Mercer Frey. I don't really know why. But here we are.”
