The end of an era

Shirley Curry, 89, has announced her retirement from YouTube after 15 years of making content.

Known as the “Skyrim Grandma,” Shirley Curry gained internet fame through YouTube videos where she played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, her favourite game. Recently she also dabbled in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

Curry has brought joy to the hearts of millions with her gameplay, but all good things must come to an end eventually.

Following an extended break from YouTube, Shirley Curry returned to her channel for a time but has now announced that she’ll be calling it quits, for good this time.

In the video she talks about what a journey its been and how much she’s enjoyed building an audience. Curry confirmed that the channel itself won’t be going anywhere, there just won’t be anymore Skyrim videos uploaded.

Instead Curry promised that there’ll be an occasional vlog uploaded instead when there’s something she’d like to share or talk about with her community, but the gameplay portion of her content is finished.

As you can imagine the comment section was filled with nothing but love and support for the YouTuber, with even YouTube itself taking the time to respond to the creator’s goodbye message.

The official YouTube account commented: “The end of an era, looking forward to your next upload.”

A similar sentiment was carried by Curry’s other fans, with one calling the announcement the “saddest day for all of the Skyrim community.”

Another read: “A legend and an icon, thank you for the most wholesome Elder Scrolls content on YT.”

In case you’re wondering what kind of impact Shirley Curry has truly had on the Elder Scrolls community, there’s actually a mod for Skyrim that adds the YouTuber to the game as a follower. One commenter even pointed out that “nearly 370,000 people have downloaded the mod.

Many have also called for Bethesda to make Curry an NPC you can encounter in The Elder Scrolls VI.

It truly is the end of an era as YouTube put it, but while it’s very sad it’s also perfectly understandable. Curry noted that her love for Skyrim has dwindled due to making so much content from it, and she no longer finds the hobby as enjoyable as she once did.

For the time being though fans can still expect the occasional upload, just no more Skyrim gameplay. We wish Shirley Curry a very happy retirement!
