Resident Evil fans are surprised with new-gen remasters appearing online seemingly ahead of an official reveal by Capcom.
It feels like the classic survival horror series Resident Evil is hotter than it’s ever been since its inception in 1996. So it would make sense for Capcom to capitalise on that hype, especially if it means re-releasing classic titles before we’re treated to Resident Evil 9.

There have been rumours making the rounds, not only regarding Resident Evil 9 but also several remakes related to Resident Evil Zero, and Resident Evil 5, and even the original game in the series is speculated to get another remake.

Of course, with so many rumours making the rounds, it’s not always easy to identify what may or may not be true. This is why all unconfirmed rumours should be taken with a pinch of salt until we get official confirmation.
That being said, speculation that looks to have more validity than most, are reports of new-gen remasters or basic re-releases, which even includes Resident Evil 6. Say what you will about RE6’s convoluted campaigns, its Mercenaries mode is fantastic, at least.
As reported by CBR.com, both the Resident Evil remake (which made its debut on the Nintendo GameCube in 2002) and 2017’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard are getting new-gen releases. That’s at least according to a recent rating by the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) in the US.
While the Resident Evil remake is backwards compatible on current consoles from its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions, it has no additional enhancements made. Whereas Resident Evil 7, along with the RE2 and RE3 remakes benefited from new-gen updates in 2022.

However, Resident Evil 7, as well as RE2 and RE3, are all enhanced with the last-gen versions of the game. But it seems that native releases are to be released soon for Xbox Series X/S (PlayStation 5 versions haven't been rated, yet).
I would assume that if/when the original Resident Evil remake gets its native current-gen port, it will be the Origins Collection which included Resident Evil Zero and bonus DLC such as additional outfits for the playable characters.
Capcom hasn't made an official announcement at the time of writing, but typically following an ESRB or PEGI rating, it usually means that a release is only weeks away and we’ll keep you posted when that information drops.
