Red Dead Redemption 2 players are surprised to find out the controversial Pinkerton detective agency is still around, following its recently hired raid on a Magic: The Gathering YouTuber.

It’s reported that the Magic: The Gathering publisher, Wizard of the Coast, hired the Pinkertons to visit the streamer Dan ‘Oldschoomtg’ Cannon, after he’d supposedly leaked unreleased cards.

Take a look at some of our favourite RDR2 wins and fails below.

The cards in question came into Cannon’s possession by accident, as he stated that he’d ordered a pack of cards from an online seller, and instead of the ones he’d ordered, he received the unreleased cards instead. Pinkerton agents then showed up outside Cannon’s house, knocking on the door with the intention of making sure the unreleased cards were returned, causing quite a bit of stress and concern for the streamer,

Fans of Rockstar’s old-west adventure game Red Dead Redemption 2 quickly recognised the group as the same Pinkertons featured within the game, as the protagonist encounters some of their agents in various missions.

Their inclusion in the game actually caused some trouble for Rockstar and publisher Take-Two Interactive as the real Pinkerton agency challenged the company, stating that it infringed on its trademark. Take-Two then retaliated with their own lawsuit.

Aside from appearing in Red Dead Redemption 2, the Pinkerton National Detective Agency is quite well-known, especially in wild west fiction, mostly due to it actually being an active group back in the old west. Agents could be hired for a variety of reasons, such as investigating wrongdoings and offering protection to those in need. The Pinkertons are still active today, but in less of a capacity, and mostly serving as extra-muscle in investigations.

Regardless, many players will have only ever heard of them from their various playthroughs of Red Dead, which is likely what prompted the surprise when it was reported they’d essentially raided a Magic: The Gathering fan.
