Like so many others I have lost countless hours this past week playing Pokémon TCG Pocket which brings the iconic card game to mobile platforms.
It’s engaging for a number of reasons; not only can you play a slimmed-down version of the game, but you can rip open booster packs to collect cards and some players think they’ve found a way to guarantee good card pulls.
For more Nintendo goodness on mobile, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp has a paid version with all previously released content
Upon selecting which pack you want to open - Pikachu, Mewtwo, or Charizard - you see a carousel of packs seemingly exactly the same.

However, some players have been rotating these packs, looking for a wrinkle in the wrapping that they say guarantees an EX or full-art card.
I’ve tried this myself a few times and the results have been mixed, and it seems the growing community of players also can’t decide if this is a legit strategy or not.
The discussion builds on Reddit, where players compare their hits from these crinkled packs.
One Redditor, hevy_hed, says, “Done it twice and got jack s**t both times so idk,” while RaccoonDu explains, “Definitely a better chance. Got 2 EXs out of 4 curved packs.”

However, even getting a curved pack isn’t guaranteed, I’ve had many pack selections where none of the packs have a kink in them and surely some had a rare card.
NF1411 gave it a try, “Just did it twice and got some decent pulls so I'm a little bit more inclined to believe it now LOL.”
There are a fair few people, not just on Reddit but across social media, who believe it’s just a quirk of the game and that players are reading too much into it.
Pulling the rarer EX cards doesn’t only give that extra hit of dopamine, but they actually unlock rental decks for battling, so a lot of players are on the look out for the special cards.
